Book Review: A Handful of Light

08 Oct 2009

Advent is the season when we wait. If you have been waiting for a useful little companion to take you through this season of Advent, over Christmas and into the New Year, then “A Handful of Light” is a book well worth purchasing.

The book provides individual reflections for the four weeks of Advent, as well as over Christmas, and for Epiphany. From essay-style reflections to haiku, “A Handful of Light” presents many different ways in which to reflect on the journey through to the celebration of Christ’s birth. An excellent range of contributors, from well-known spiritual writer Craufurd Murray to children’s writer Joy Cowley, and New Zealand’s hymn writer Colin Gibson, sees many aspects of that holy season given due credence.

The book covers everything from the connection between the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the vision of Isaiah of a new heaven and a new earth, to the importance of praying and being still in God’s presence as we try and combat the restlessness of the human condition. Included are illustrations and photographs of icons and banners to assist in the reflection which the book encourages you to engage in.
So, if you are looking for an aid to help you wait on God more effectively, why not treat yourself to an early Christmas present and purchase “A Handful of Light”?

Available only from the Cathedral gift shop, with all proceeds donated to Canteen.
