Initially the Society of Salt and Light started on Tuesday night but due to popularity there is now a Wednesday night repeat session as well. At the Addington Coffee Coop even on the smaller Wednesday night around one hundred young people get together. There is free home made hot chocolate and Spanky Moore MCs the evening.
There are "awkward questions" to begin with which offers a chance to meet new people and most people cheerily join in. Following the mingling, there is usually an introduction item and then the rest of the night is divided into speakers looking at that evening's topic from a number of different angles. The speakers might be on the stage or shown via video on the two screens used throughout the night. After each speaker there is a question to discuss with those at your table. The questions are thought provoking and the very next speaker may offer a completely different opinion on what has just been discussed.
The pace is relaxed and yet a lot of ideas are being shared. At the end of the night there are resource materials available so the topics can be discussed in small groups during the rest of the month.
Spanky Moore, the Diocesan Young Adults Ministry Developer was one of a small team that set up the evenings about two years ago. "We were inspired by TED talks, pechakucha and other non faith organisations and how they were communicating their ideas." He says.
Spanky says the approach is to show the Anglican tradition also has many values to offer the spirituality of young adults in the region.
