From the Word…

…I urge that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgivings be made for everyone, for kings and all who are in high positions, so that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and dignity. This is right and is acceptable in the sight of God our Saviour, who desires everyone to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth.

(1 Timothy 2:1–4)

At Synod our Bishop called us to a year of prayer and study:
Therefore I stand before you today to call for a year of prayer and study so that we might better understand and receive the healing God offers, and furthermore be better equipped to offer God’s wholeness to others…”

Anglican News & Events – 24 October 2012

News

1. Public Events where the Archbishop of Canterbury will be present

Saturday – Sunday, 3 – 4 November 2012

Saturday evening, 3 November, the Most Reverend Rowan Williams will attend “The Concert” at the AMI Stadium in Addington, and is expected to address the crowd briefly at 8.30pm.

If you plan to attend the 9.00 Sunday morning Eucharist service on 4 November at Christ’s College, please bring your own chair. Preferential indoor seating will be given to Cathedral regulars. In addition to seating in the chapel, the public is invited to sit outdoors (BYO chair) at the College. There will be excellent sound channeled outside and the Archbishop will take communion to the people seated outside, but there are no spare chairs available.

Sunday afternoon on 4 November Dr Williams will participate in a 2.00pm Service of the Word at St Christopher’s Church, Avonhead. He is expected to speak on the topic: “What does holiness look like? How do we seek holiness, given it is ultimately a gift?” There will be video screens and sound throughout the complex, and it is hoped there will sound outdoors, so it may be a good idea to bring a chair to this service if you are not arriving early. The only reserved seating will be for the ecumenical guests.

At 3.00pm young people (ages 16–30) will be invited back into St Christopher’s Church to listen to the Archbishop and have a chance for him to answer a few questions. Afterwards he returns to Auckland.

8. “Our Place, Our Voice: Explorations in Contextual Theology”

This new publication on the Church in Aotearoa New Zealand and Polynesia will be launched on the eve of the ACC gathering in Auckland NZ. Published by the Council for Anglican Women’s Studies, the book is a collection of essays that reflect the spread and diversity of women’s theological scholarship

The essays explore contemporary challenges, tensions, and possibilities in ministry in this three-Tikanga church, the most southern of Churches in the Anglican Communion, by women who consistently make strong contributions to the wider structural and political life of the Church, nationally and internationally.

Edited by Erice Fairbrother and Dr Jenny Plane Te Paa, this book will become an essential reader for those engaged in ministry across the “borderlands” of culture, gender, pastoral care, ministry training, and formation. The book will be launched at the Vaughan Park Anglican Retreat Centre in Auckland with members of IAWN as they gather for the ACC meeting and on sale at the ACC meeting. It may also be purchased through the General Synod office in Auckland: gensec@ang.org.nz or www.anglican.org.nz

11. Canterbury Business Association International Village proposal

The association is currently working with local government to assist immigrants by determining the feasibility of an international village to help businesses relocate and solve their premise crisis. The international village would be an area with ethnic food, retail, an art gallery, and training facilities aimed at the local market and tourists. It would be a great way to showcase the multicultural aspects of Christchurch. So we really need the input of a lot of Christchurch residents, they will give further support to help make our village dream a reality and we can see if this plan is feasible.

Follow the link below that leads to the Christchurch resident survey. You can help the association by filling it in this week, and maybe it will help you, too: http://fluidsurveys.com/surveys/cba/cba-chch-residents-survey/

17. Full-time Vicar, the Anglican Parish of Havelock North

Applications close 23 November 2012, 5.00pm

The Parish of Havelock North encompasses a large, mainly rural and coastal area in sunny Hawke’s Bay. St Luke’s located in Havelock North is one of two churches within the parish region. The other, St Stephen’s at Elsthorpe, caters for the large farming community, as well as residents living in the two nearby beach locations.

St Luke’s is known for its commitment to youth and social services, and increasing emphasis on mission. Additional to Sunday morning services, a range of weekly services and groups, including morning prayers Tuesday to Friday, and a Thursday Eucharist is run. Community-based ministry plays a large part in the life of St Luke’s including services at local retirement villages, rest-homes, a government funded after school programme, an op shop, and a number of youth programmes catering for juniors through to seniors. St Luke’s is a very popular venue for baptisms, weddings and funerals. For this reason the parish recognises this is a significant and important part of the Vicar’s ministry, providing as it does, a regular connection to a part of the community seldom seen at services.

The parish of Havelock North is seeking to find a person with a strong and inspirational faith, compassionate, and able to relate to all ages.

The Anglican Consultative Council is the Communion’s only fully representative international body, with members elected from every province or member church. The ACC includes archbishops, bishops, clergy and lay people from every corner of the Anglican world.

The ACC provides the only opportunity for Anglicans to talk through their mission and ministry opportunities and challenges in a forum which includes lay people and clergy who are not bishops.
