From the Word…

Are any among you suffering? They should pray. Are any cheerful? They should sing songs of praise….confess your sins to one another, and pray for one another, so that you may be healed. The prayer of the righteous is powerful and effective.
(James 5:13,16)

At Synod our Bishop called us to a year of prayer and study:
Therefore I stand before you today to call for a year of prayer and study so that we might better understand and receive the healing God offers, and furthermore be better equipped to offer God’s wholeness to others…”

9. Tui Tui Tuia *: The Use of Māori in Worship in Te Tikanga Pākehā
(a valuable resource for all ministry units)

An easy-to-read resource to assist people to learn from the rich imagery from our natural world in the Māori text, as well as from the English, in our New Zealand Prayer Book/He Karakia Mihinare o Aotearoa.

It provides another way of encouraging Anglicans to grow on their bicultural journey through discovering the taonga of te reo Māori, integral to the Christian story of this country, and to our bicultural relationship. There are helpful guidelines on how and where to introduce use of the Māori text in the liturgy, and the good reasons for doing this.

Material from the book may be copied as required.

This book, published by the Bicultural Education Committee, Diocese of Christchurch, is an edited and expanded version of material originally prepared by Joan Metge, in consultation with Māori experts, Rev’ds Maori Marsden, John Kamariera & Hone Kaa; Hepora Young and Shane Jones in the 1990s for the parish of St Peter's, Willis St, Wellington. It has also been used by many other Anglicans throughout Aotearoa New Zealand.

Convenient A5 sized, 47 page booklet, price $10.00 (p&p & GST included).

Contact Diocesan Bicultural Education Committee through Marjorie Smart 03 343 6607 or smartjam@xtra.co.nz

* The title refers to lines on p. 488 of the Prayer Book about our being reconciled and united in both suffering and hope:

Ka aru mātou i a te Karaiti, [We follow Christ

Tui, tui, tuia mātou, We are bound, bound, bound together,

Tui, tui, tuia ki te ora. bound, bound, bound together
into fullness of life.]

10. Remembrance Sunday, 11 November 2012

Gavin Marriott Christchurch NZ

Bob Davis, International Chairman of The International Military Music Society, is staying in Christchurch over the Remembrance Day weekend, and he is going to be available for inclusion in a part of any church service that Sunday. Normally he is called upon in Auckland or overseas during that occasion, so it will be an honour to have him here. (The media will be interested.)

Remembrance Sunday this year is Armistice Day, but there is no need for a "dawn service" in conjunction with Bob’s visit. He normally gives a 1 minute talk, lays a Poppy at the altar, and reads a poem. It can be more or less. It is appropriate for there to be a sermon on honouring our fallen & peace (not glorification of war), or a Hymn. Often the congregation can places names of their fallen forebears on a board to be blessed.

Contact Bob through Gavin Marriott at iteach@xtra.co.nz

17. Request for Information from Children’s Ministry workers and leaders

Submissions due by Friday, 28 September

I am writing to request your help to produce a report from Christchurch for the National Children’s and Family Ministry Strandz meeting, 18–19 October in Hamilton.

If you could provide some Celebrations and Challenges you have faced in the last year in your children’s ministry it would be awesome. Even a few lines about creative ways you have connected with children and their families without church buildings and spaces would help the rest of the country understand the creative hand of God on us here in Christchurch.

Any requests for help with resources or art equipment or anything else can be put in the report. Last year there was a genuine desire to help, so it would be great to offer specific ideas. The report needs to be ready by the beginning of October so it can be circulated to every diocese before the meeting.

Prayerful blessings and thanks,

Angela Brown

27. Back to Church Sunday

Sunday, 30 September 2012

At the end of September the ninth Back to Church Sunday will take place in thousands of churches across five continents. Now a book which explores Back to Church Sunday and how to make it more effective has been published to deepen the understanding of invitation.

Archbishop John Sentamu in the foreword says “This book is about helping churches re-learn how to make disciples. A challenge from the ‘Back to Church Sunday’ initiative, it goes right to the heart of what it is to be church, namely, worshipping God and infecting his world with the goodness of Jesus Christ. Ever since Philip first urged Nathanael to ‘come and see’ (John 1:46) the practice of invitation has been crucial to spreading of the Gospel of Jesus Christ.”

The book is available on the following website http://www.unlockingthegrowth.com/book/

28. Christian World Service Seeks Parish Advocates

Michael Earle, Church Co-ordinator, is keen to extend the invitation to all our New Zealand churches who have given an ecumenical mandate to CWS to act on their behalf as their overseas aid and development agency since 1945.

Resource kits for this year's CWS Christmas appeal have recently been mailed to parishes. CWS is planning regional forums with local clergy and Parish Advocates to introduce them to this material in October/November in Auckland, Hamilton, Napier, Wellington, Christchurch and Dunedin - details will be put on our website next month.

Michael would be most grateful if you could give him the name and contact details of your CWS Parish Advocate , so he can send details of the forums. Thank you very much for your help in undertaking this.

CWS can also offer some speakers in the weeks leading up to and over Advent if you want to hear more about their work.

If you have any queries, do contact the CWS office at 03-366-9274.

Tuesday, 2 October, 1.30 pm–3.00pm, St Chad’s Anglican Church (cnr. Buckleys Road and Carnarvon Street)

The aim of this event is to offer Christian worshippers in the east of Christchurch the experience of a service of traditional hymns accompanied by organ music in a church venue. This is particularly important at this time when so many church buildings are no longer open and older people have experienced the loss of familiar places and church music.

If you have parishioners who would enjoy such an afternoon, please consider inviting them and providing transport.

A telephone call to the parish office to give us numbers for catering would be appreciated, ph 03-389-5833.
