Fresh reassurance about the future of St Mary’s Timaru

15 Aug 2012

Fresh reassurance about the future of St Mary’s Timaru was offered to local church representatives at a meeting in Christchurch recently.

Six St Marys representatives met with Bishop Victoria Matthew, Church Property Trustees staff, the diocesan manager and an engineer to consider an engineering progress report.

The report confirmed additional connections between the roof and walls will bring St Marys church to between 33% and 40% of the New Building Standard. Roof tying work done in 2007 needs to be supplemented in light of what has been learnt through the Christchurch earthquakes, engineer Mark Whiteside from Holmes Engineering told the meeting.

Church Property Trustees reaffirmed that there will be no use of any Anglican buildings identified as under 34%.

A full engineering report for St Marys, which will consider what additional work would be involved in bringing the church to 67% NBS and 100%NBS, is expected within 30 days.
