Standing Committee Snippets - October & November 2009

The following summarises the businesses of the meetings held in October and November (no meeting held in September). Please note – these are not a complete record of the meetings.

1. Co-opted member to Standing Committee
Mr Jeremy Johnson has been confirmed as a co-opted member of Standing Committee for 3 years.

2. Archdeacon for Mission and Director of Education
Appointments have now been made to both these positions – The Revd Canon John Day as Archdeacon for Mission, and The Revd Canon Peter Carrell as Director of Education. Both will start towards the end of January.

3. Bi-Cultural Education Proposal
A proposal for implementation of a bicultural competency plan has now been approved by Standing Committee and it will now be considered by clergy in their various archdeaconry meetings. It sets out expectations for clergy who are new to Aotearoa New Zealand, as well as for competency in use of te reo Maori in services of worship.

4. Anglican Lutheran Guidelines
General Synod Standing Committee had asked our Standing Committee to consider some guidelines for Anglican and Lutheran Congregation who desire to practice Eucharistic hospitality and share pastoral care. Our Standing Committee recommended their approval.

5. Clergy Housing
It is some time since clergy housing was reviewed so a small group comprising The Ven Geoff Haworth, The Ven Lawrence Kimberley and Alison Jephson has been appointed to do this work. It will include review of the policy for clergy wishing to move into their own homes, and review of the housing allowance, as well as the standard required of vicarages.

6. Parish of Waimate – Change of Trust
The Chancellor reported that all requirements had been met, so approval was given for change of use of a bequest in the Parish of Waimate.

7. Nominations Committee
Terms of reference for a Nominations Committee have been approved and potential members approached. This group will have responsibility for recommending the names of people who could potentially fill rolls on boards/committees of both diocesan and associated bodies, including those for election at Synod. They will seek a balance of rural/urban, age, gender, lay/ordained at the same time as complementing skills that already exist on the various bodies.

8. Memorandum of Understanding between Theology House and Otago University Department of Theology and Religious Studies
Standing Committee has given its support in principle for the close relationship that this Memorandum of Understanding sets out.

9. New Bishop Elect of Dunedin
Standing Committee has extended its congratulations and support to the Bishop Elect of the Diocese of Dunedin, The Ven Dr Kelvin Wright.

10. Potential relocation of the Anglican Centre
Standing Committee has been advised of the process of looking for alternative offices for the Anglican Centre at the end of the current lease. It has not been conclusively decided whether the Anglican Centre will remain in its current location or move. Safe and accessible car parking is a primary consideration.

11. Faith Community Nursing
A grant is being made to the Parish of Temuka to support its appointment of a Faith Community Nurse. This was one of the strategies in the Strategic Plan.

12. Diocesan Manager’s Job Description
This has been reviewed in conjunction with her performance appraisal, and approved by Standing Committee.

13. Boundaries in Ministry Training
A request that these be held in Timaru has been conveyed to the Diocesan Monitor.

14. Appointments
These have been made to 9 different bodies.
