Geraldine Anglican Parish is hosting an art exhibition at St Mary’s from Sundays, 8 December to 22 December.
The 14 canvases are by Australian-born local Catherine Coster, a member of the Catholic Parish of St Mary MacKillop.
Catherine is a landscape painter whose impressionist landscapes reflect her spiritual walk. Vicar Hugh McCafferty spotted her work in September 2021 in a local gallery. Several conversations later, the idea of a series to be exhibited in St Mary’s church began to take shape. In 2022, both began praying seriously about it, and the idea of a series reflecting God’s joy developed in Catherine’s mind. God also seemed to be suggesting Advent.
The final exhibition charts the spiritual journey of a soul. It is informed by the allegorical novel Hinds’ Feet on High Places by English author Hannah Hurnard. Looking for further inspiration, Catherine alighted on Dark Night of the Soul by St John of the Cross.
The works are not very Christmassy, but then, neither was Christmas. Sitting quietly with these pieces invites one to take another step on the spiritual journey.
The exhibition is open every day 10am-4pm. All works are for sale.
