Exploring Faith In God

Exploring is good

Pondering about God and the ultimate thing in life is common to almost everyone. We look at the stars, listen to a magnificent symphony or see the smile of a baby and most people are struck that life is incredible! But we also think there must be more to life than meets the eye. Christianity says, “Yes – there is God!”

You’ve come to the right place. We’d love you to join us as we journey towards God.

Read the Bible

The Bible is the story of how God gradually revealed himself to humankind – ultimately through Jesus. A great place to discover more about God is by reading about Jesus – we suggest beginning with Mark’s gospel.

Visit your local Church

Although many people find it hard to attend a group for the first time you will always be welcomed at a local church. Furthermore, you will meet people just like yourself who are interested in finding out about and coming to know God more. Many churches run introductory courses and will offer guidance on how to pray. Click here to find your local church.

Talk to someone about Faith: You may have a friend who can help you connect with God. Certainly, you will find people at your local church who would love to listen and help you in your journey toward God. Your local Vicar is also available to have a coffee, to talk to, to answer questions and to pray with you.

Online Resources: We understand that many people want to actively explore God and the ‘God question’ by themselves. There are many online resources that can help. The ‘Everyday Faith‘ portal of the Church of England is very helpful and Christianity.com has a lot of articles and resources.

Podcasts Can Help: The Bible Project explores the stories and themes of the Bible in an accessible way. Pastor Rick Warren runs a daily podcast called ‘Daily Hope‘ and ‘Unbelievable?‘ is hosted by Justin Brierley and features debates and discussions between Christians and skeptics on various topics.

Books and Courses: ‘Finding the Forgotten God’ is a great book for beginners especially since it was written by a New Zealander and includes some fascinating stories of ordinary Kiwis searching for and finding faith in God. This book is available through the Diocesan Office.

Invitation to Prayer: Wherever you are on your spiritual journey we know that prayer is the key! You will find people in your local church who can pray with you and help you develop the ability to pray yourself. Jesus Himself promised that those who seek God would find their heart’s desire (Matt 7:7-8).

What are people saying about their faith in God?

Without my faith, I would be totally lost. I have always trusted God in all things, health and family and even before my last surgery I felt his presence and healing hand.”

Florence Roy, Parish of Northwest Christchurch.

My faith in God means I am not a cosmic accident: I am willed, loved, necessary and called to do good things in the world. As a disabled person, that is a priceless gift.”

John Fox, St Christopher’s, Avonhead.

What my faith in God means to me is that I am never alone. I know that through God the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit I am nurtured in His everlasting love and guided by His Word. No matter what the world throws at me, I know that God is standing with me and will never leave my side. Every day, I am thankful that He sees and hears all and that His love is infinite.”

Kim Parrent, St Faiths, East Christchurch.

My faith in God represents a foundation of hope and strength, a source of guidance and wisdom and a way to find meaning and purpose in life. It brings comfort when challenged, inspiration when uncertain, and is a compass for decision making.”

Marz Witty, Linwood-Aranui.
