The Synod is a representative body of the whole Diocese gathered under the leadership of the Bishop. Within the constraints of General Synod Canons, the church, centred in the diocese with its
Bishop, orders its own life and speaks both to its own members and also to the world within which it works.
You could say that the Diocesan Synod is the “Parliament” of the
Diocese.
As such, it is concerned with the organisation and good government of the Diocese. It meets at least once annually to discuss, and make policy decisions, on how best to carry out the
Mission of the Church. Between Synods these policy decisions, and other Diocesan matters are dealt with, on behalf of the Diocesan Synod, by the Diocesan Standing Committee. Standing Committee members are elected by Synod from Synod members. Standing
Committee is “Synod between Synods”.
