The Parish Collections


The information below indicates which parishes have deposited their collections in the archives.
The names of the parishes are based on those that were used at the time the records were deposited. Information about previous geographical arrangements and former parish names is included.  There have been later changes to Parish names due to re-organisation and amalgamation.

List of Parish Names with Deposited Collections
  • Addington: originally known as Middle Heathcote, links with Christchurch- St Michael and Spreydon
  • Akaroa-Banks Peninsula: previously two separate districts. Various boundary changes include links to Mt Herbert and Governor’s Bay
  • Amberley
  • Amuri Co-operating: transferred from the Diocese of Nelson in 1990.
  • Aranui-Wainoni: links to Christchurch- St Michael
  • Ashburton: originally included Tinwald
  • Avonhead: previously part of Riccarton-St Peter
  • Avonside: previously included Linwood and Burwood
  • Belfast –Redwood: previously known as Belfast with Marshland
  • Bishopdale: previously attached to Papanui
  • Bryndwr
  • Burnside –Harewood: links to Papanui
  • Burwood: originally included New Brighton
  • Harewood: previously part of Papanui and Bishopdale
  • Cashmere: previously part of Sydenham
  • Chatham Islands: attached to Kumara and Lyttelton at various times
  • Cheviot: transferred from the Diocese of Nelson in 1990.
  • ChristChurch Cathedral
  • Christchurch-St John: also known as St John the Baptist, Latimer Square
  • Christchurch-St Luke: also known as St Luke the Evangelist, the first city parish to be divided from Christchurch-St Michael
  • Christchurch–St Michael: also known as St Michael and All Angels. This parish was the original Parish of Christchurch.
  • Ellesmere: previously two districts Ellesmere/Leeston and Southbridge
  • Fairlie: became Mackenzie Co-operating
  • Fendalton
  • Geraldine: originally part of a large area that included Temuka,  Te Ngawai and Fairlie
  • Glenmark-Waikari: previously two separate districts, Glenmark and Waikari
  • Halswell-Prebbleton: previously two separate districts, Halswell and Prebbleton, with links to Hornby
  • Hanmer Springs: transferred from the Diocese of Nelson in 1990.
  • Heathcote-Mt Pleasant: the Heathcote portion of this parish was previously part of a larger one which included Woolston and Opawa and was known as Lower Heathcote.
  • Highfield: previously part of Timaru.
  • Hinds Co-operating: links to Tinwald
  • Hokitika
  • Hornby: Includes Templeton and was previously part of Prebbleton.
  • Hororata
  • Kaiapoi: Included Tuahiwi at various times.
  • Kensington-Otipua : previously part of Timaru
  • Kumara: Transferred to the Diocese of Nelson in 2000. Records are still held in Diocese of Christchurch.
  • Leeston: amalgamated with Southbridge to form Ellesmere
  • Lincoln
  • Linwood: previously part of Avonside
  • Lyttelton: previously Lyttelton and West Lyttelton. West Lyttelton divided between Lyttelton and Governor’s Bay. The latter is now part of Mt Herbert.
  • Malvern
  • Mackenzie Co-operating: previously Fairlie.
  • Marchweil: previously part of Timaru.
  • Mayfield-Mt Somers
  • Merivale
  • Methven
  • Mt Herbert: Includes parts of Little River, Governor’s Bay and West Lyttelton.
  • New Brighton: previously part of Burwood
  • North New Brighton: previously part of New Brighton.
  • Opawa–St Martins: previously two parishes. Heathcote, Woolston and Opawa were originally one parish known as Lower Heathcote.
  • Otaio-Bluecliffs: also known as St Andrews Co-operating
  • Oxford-Cust: previously two separate districts, Oxford and Cust.
  • Papanui: previously included Bishopdale and Harewood.
  • Phillipstown: now part of Te Pihopatanga o e Aotearoa ki Te Waipounamu, records retained.
  • Pukaki Co-operating
  • Rakaia
  • Rangiora: Includes some Woodend and Tuahiwi records.
  • Riccarton-St James: also known as Lower Riccarton 
  • Ross and South Westland
  • St Albans 
  • Southbridge: amalgamated with Leeston to form Ellesmere
  • Spreydon
  • Sumner-Redcliffs: Sumner was previously part of the Heathcote Parish.
  • Sydenham: originally included Cashmere and was known as Colombo Road
  • Temuka: originally part of a larger area which included Te Ngawai, Geraldine and Fairlie.
  • Te Ngawai: originally part of a larger area which included Temuka, Geraldine and Fairlie.
  • Timaru: previously included Highfield, Kensington-Otipua and Marchweil.
  • Tinwald
  • Tuahiwi: At various times been part of Kaiapoi, Woodend and Rangiora.
  • Upper Riccarton-Yaldhurst: also known as St Peter’s Upper Riccarton.
  • Waihao Downs; also known as Waihao Co-operating
  • Waimate
  • Waiho Co-operating
  • Woodend: links to Rangiora
  • Woolston: originally part of a larger area which included Heathcote and Opawa.
